A proper goal should scare you. It should thrill, excite, and drive. It should compel you to wake early, stay late, dig deep, and never, ever quit. Unfortunately, many people are without clearly-defined goals. They are, as Zig Ziglar might say, “wandering generalities instead of meaningful specifics.”
“Goals provide the energy source that powers our lives.” —Dennis Waitley
“The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” —Michelangelo
For those of us who have taken the time to set goals, it can be disillusioning to discover how many working adults are meandering through life with a wait-and-see, fingers-crossed, let’s-hope-for-the-best mentality. And then, at some point, when they are forced to confront their mediocrity, they wonder (sincerely, in fact) why they didn’t do more, attain more, experience more, learn more, become more. They mourn and, perhaps, even accept their unremarkable existence, attributing it to fate or destiny.
Many systems exist for goal setting. One system that we endorse requires people to identify the following goals:
Professional Goals
These goals are typically specific to work. They might involve pay increases, sales targets, promotions, continuing education, specialization, territory transfers, starting your own business, etc.
Physical Goals
These goals often involve exercise, nutrition, sleep, sex, physical therapy, rehabilitation, weight loss, weight gain, aesthetics, etc.
Personal Goals
These are often the most exciting for people, as they are often a reflection of the misty-eyed dreams that make it so much fun to be human. Personal goals might involve traveling, purchasing a house or a car, getting a dog, learning another language or musical instrument, making it home for dinner every night so that you can hear about your daughter’s day at school, etc.
Of course, there is more to this goal-setting system than simply identifying professional, physical, and personal goals. But this is where we begin. Would your business benefit from this system?
